Key Concepts
Visibility: Whether your brand appeared in a given AI answer, measured as a percentage of tracked answers.
Citation share: How often a specific page or domain is cited, as a proportion of all citations.
Citation rank: Your position among competitors by citation share. Use it alongside visibility to check whether a visibility gain was actually earned.
Quick Reference
How to close the citation gap
- Cover topics where engines cite your competitors and not you
- Make content extractable, so a section that can stand alone can be cited alone
- Show up across the channels that influence AI answers, and test new ones as they emerge, since the mix shifts over time
What to change in your reporting
- Report citation share and citation rank, not visibility on its own
- Keep the two numbers separate. Do not average them into one score, because the gap between them is the signal
- Break results out per platform, not as a blended number
- Break out again by the models inside each engine (Google runs several, and they can disagree about your brand on the same day)
Replace this: “We rank number one.”
With this: “Here is our citation share, here is our citation rank, and here is how both differ by platform.”
Benchmark: OpusClip in 30 days
- Used Profound to find where competitors were winning citations, then built and optimized content against those gaps
- Tracked progress on a seven-day rolling average
- Visibility rose from about 30% to 45%, and citation ranking reached first
- Competitors had more than a decade of market presence
Gotchas
- Visibility behaves like a tide: it can rise for everyone at once and tell you nothing about what you did
- If three publishers rewrite a post and drop your name, a mention-driven visibility score can disappear
- Traditional rank still matters for getting in the door (an unindexed page cannot be used by AI), but ranking first does not guarantee a citation
