AI search: Search that uses AI to interpret a question and write a direct answer, usually with links back to the sources that shaped it. Found in Google features like AI Overviews and in conversational products like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude.
Answer engine: Any system that assembles a direct answer for the user instead of returning a list of links.
Citation: A reference an AI tool provides that points back to a website. Citations show which pages influenced the answer, but they are not the end goal.
Answer engine optimization (AEO): Optimizing content for visibility and citations in AI-generated responses. SEO aims to rank pages for keywords and drive clicks. AEO aims to get your brand selected and mentioned as the authoritative answer.
The real goal: Your brand appears in the answer, described the way you would describe yourself. A link back is sometimes included, but often is not.

Match the specificity of the query. In the video’s example, a page won influence over the AI Overview by stating clear traits that matched the search (hardside, under 1,500 pounds) and explaining why the product was the top pick.
