Key Concepts
Answer Engine: Any AI system that responds to a question with prose rather than a page of ranked results.
Citation supply chain: The ranked list of domains and source types a specific AI platform pulls from when answering a given topic.
Visibility rank vs. visibility score: Rank is where you sit relative to competitors. Score is the share of tracked answers that mentioned your brand. A high rank with a low score signals a platform split: you lead when you appear, but you do not appear reliably.
Quick Reference
How to read platform differences
- Platforms agree: Separate source sets reached the same verdict, so the number is trustworthy. Protect the sites that got you there.
- Platforms disagree: They are reading different sources. The low platform is reading sites you are not on, and that list is your to-do list.
- Agreement is not three separate wins. It is overlapping supply chains, and any one can slip without the other two. A combined total will not show which one moved.
Before opening a platform view
- Check visibility rank
- Check visibility score
- If rank is high, score is low, and platforms disagree, the attribute is still in play
Platform tendencies
- Gemini: leans on forums and reference sites
- AI Overviews: leans on video and social
- ChatGPT: has not filtered the web the way Google has, so promotional roundups and third-party pages can still carry weight. A win may not come from the page you want.
- Google surfaces: AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini often return different answers to the same prompt. Take pages that already rank in Google organic and make them easy to extract from.

Gotchas
- A split is not the models “making up their minds.” Cross-model overlap runs 35% below a single model’s overlap with itself, because the source sets differ. Sources are the part you can optimize.
- Model-specific tactics break when the model updates. Knowing how platforms differ lasts longer.
- Do not treat platforms as separate audiences to win one at a time. Treat them as separate opinions on the same question.
