Key Concepts
SAGE: A four-step loop for competing in AI search: Setup, Analyze, Generate, Engineer. It is meant to be run repeatedly, not once.
Engineer (the step): The step where you automate repetitive tasks so your team spends its time on work that needs human judgment. Do not confuse it with technical engineering. It is about building a system that improves over time.
Quick Reference
The SAGE loop
- Setup: Decide what you are tracking and why. Output: a clear starting point you are confident in.
- Analyze: Work out where you are winning and losing. Output: a short, ranked list of gaps, each with an explanation of why it exists.
- Generate: Close the gaps you found. Output: new content published and existing content optimized, with the AI answers that changed because of it.
- Engineer: Automate the repetitive work. Output: a system that gets better and more efficient over time.
Then run the loop again.
Check yourself at each step
- Setup: Can you say why every prompt is on your list? If not, you cannot trust what it tells you later.
- Analyze: Can you explain why each gap is there?
- Generate: Can you point to specific AI answers that changed?
- Engineer: Is the team spending less time on repetitive work than last cycle?
Benchmark: Plaid
- Starting point: two-person organic growth team with no view into what ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Claude said about the brand
- Setup and Analyze: used Answer Engine Insights to see what the engines were saying, creating a measurable baseline
- Engineer: built a Content Optimizer Agent (audits and rewrites pages to earn citations), an FAQ Generator Agent (finds the questions buyers ask AI so they can be answered early), and health report agents (track visibility, citations, and competitors)
- Efficiency: a 300+ prompt project that would have taken about two weeks took less than two hours
- Results: LLM referral traffic to plaid.com up over 300%, conversions from that traffic up 210%
Remember
- AEO keeps changing as engines update and answers shift, so what worked last month may not work next month. This is why SAGE is a loop and not a checklist.
- Automation frees the team for judgment-heavy work. It does not replace it.
